Account Manager - Medical Communications
Be the reason it all runs smoothly.
Are you the person everyone comes to when something needs to move? If you can keep clients calm, writers briefed and a dozen live projects on track at the same time, read on.
We're growing the Client Services team in our Medical Communications team. We're looking for an Account Manager to lead the day-to-day on a major new account with a tier 1 global pharmaceutical client. You'll sit at the intersection of client and agency, overseeing how medical writing projects get resourced and delivered, day in, day out. As the account grows, you'll have a real say in how it runs.
Who we are
Word Monster is an agency with a difference, on a mission to transform healthcare communications worldwide. We're built on a core of scientific excellence and an award-winning, life-first culture. Our proprietary frameworks and our Friction in Pharma® philosophy underpin a genuinely different approach to medcomms: evidence-based, sharp, and built around what our pharma, research, tech and charity clients actually need.
We're remote-first, so you work from anywhere, design your own setup and manage your own schedule. We stay connected through our virtual 2D office, regular socials, and in-person get-togethers like our annual Monster Mash retreat.
The role
As Account Manager, you'll join our Medical Communications team, reporting to our Senior Account Director. It's a collaborative team of around ten, all of them quietly obsessive about the quality of what goes out the door. You'll work as if you were part of the client's own team, helping produce content for both healthcare professionals and patients, backed by Word Monster's bench of talented medical writers.
You'll be embedded in both worlds, the client's systems and ours, acting as the daily project lead. That means responding quickly when requests land, booking the right writers for the right briefs, making sure every piece of work passes through our quality control process, and keeping the client confidently in the loop on where everything stands.
The work will cover a variety of medical communications deliverables, with the opportunity to work across different types of projects, in-line with client needs and the evolution of our accounts. Around 80% of your time will sit with the core account. Day to day, you'll be talking to client teams and to our writers in equal measure, leading internal, daily stand-up meetings, joining all-team catch-ups, wellbeing check-ins and the odd coffee break.
What you'll be doing
• Acting as the main point of contact between the client and Word Monster's writing team, building the kind of trust that makes a genuine partnership work
• Triaging incoming requests and responding promptly, so nothing sits waiting
• Booking and coordinating writer resource against project needs and deadlines, including anticipating when we'll need freelance support
• Making sure every piece of content moves through our quality control process before it reaches the client
• Keeping the client regularly and clearly updated on project status, and the Senior Account Director in the loop
• Balancing multiple live projects at once without losing sight of the details: timelines, budgets, trackers and reconciliations all kept straight
• Spotting where things could run better, and saying so
• Keeping everything squarely within ABPI and local codes of practice, flagging concerns early and proposing solutions
What good looks like
We've thought about this, so you're not walking in blind:
• At 3 months: you're fully onboarded onto the account, you've completed all client-specific training, and you're managing the day-to-day with minimal support
• At 6 months: you've built real relationships with key client contacts, and you're suggesting ways to improve our processes and ways of working
• At 12 months: you're running the account day-to-day independently, including internal and freelance resourcing, and contributing to its sustained growth
What you'll bring
Essential:
• Prior experience as a Senior Account Executive or Account Manager in a medical communications agency
• Strong organisation and resourcing skills. You can juggle multiple projects and people without dropping the ball
• A natural multitasker, comfortable moving between priorities in a fast-paced environment
• A relationship-builder at heart, equally at ease with clients and with the writing team
• Excellent written and verbal communication, and a habit of picking up the phone
• Meticulous attention to detail, with the judgement to know what to handle yourself and what to escalate
• Good working knowledge of pharma regulation and the ABPI code
Nice to have:
• A general life sciences background (preferred, not a dealbreaker)
• Experience in a small or lean agency
• Familiarity with client-side workflow systems such as Workfront
• A project management certification, or other relevant training
The honest bit
This is a fast-paced account and it needs someone who can get to grips with it quickly. Requests land at pace, and the value you add is in how fast and how calmly you turn them around. The first few months are a steep learning curve. We're upfront about that because we'd rather find someone who's energised by it than someone caught off guard.
Most of what you'll need to learn early on is the invisible stuff: the client's ways of working and their systems, and how to navigate Word Monster for internal resourcing and freelance support. You won't be doing it alone. You'll have a structured induction, a buddy from day one, regular line-manager check-ins, and training on how we use AI internally.
What's in it for you
• Salary of £35,000 to £45,000 per annum
• Annual company performance bonus (one pot, shared equally across the whole team)
• Share options, because we're all in this together
• Company-paid private health insurance with Vitality (fully covered by us)
• Pension (we contribute 3% if you join the scheme; you contribute 5%)
• Individual and team training / self-development budget
• Enhanced parental leave (full pay: 12 weeks maternity, 4 weeks paternity)
• 25 days' holiday (3 saved for the Christmas to New Year shutdown), plus UK bank holidays
• Your birthday off, so that's 26 (day in lieu if it lands on a weekend)
• An extra day's holiday after 2+ years, building up to 5 additional days over time
• Buy up to 5 more holiday days if you want them
• Optional UK “working together” days, with a contribution to travel
• A quarterly wellbeing perk, because you've earned it
• Financial coaching with Octopus MoneyCoach
• Your own personalised monster character (naturally)
The process
There's no take-home task for this one. We'd rather spend the time talking to you properly about how you work, the accounts you've run and what you'd do with this one. We can be flexible on notice periods, though ideally we're looking at around a month.
Sound like you? We'd love to hear from you. Apply with your CV and a quick note on why this one caught your eye, and help us keep writing with bite.
